John Paul Jones, a founder of the United States Navy, died on this date in 1792. Hero of the great naval victory won by his ship Bon Homme Richard over the British frigate HMS Serapis, it was during that battle that he thundered his response to the British surrender demand "Have you struck your Colors?"

"Struck, sir? I have not yet begun to fight."

He is entombed in the crypt of the "Cathedral of the Navy," the Chapel at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
