U.S. Representative Dan Burton, chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, is so disgusted with the abuses committed in the name of the FBI's war on the Mafia that he filed a bill yesterday to remove the name of legendary FBI director J. Edgar Hoover from the bureau headquarters in Washington. ### Story from The Boston Globe

The bill has several co-sponsors from both parties and it's not clear if there is still somewhere (inside or outside the Bureau) a J. Edgar Hoover constituency that would mobilize in defense of his record and reputation. What was uncovered by Congressman Burton's committee regarding innocent men who languished in prison so that FBI operations and sources wouldn't be compromised has been deeply unsettling. And it's not the only stain on the record.
