On October 1, 1962, Groucho Marx introduced Johnny Carson as the new host of The Tonight Show. The guests on that first program, based then in New York, were Rudy Vallee, Joan Crawford, Mel Brooks, and Tony Bennett.



And, on the same day, Brian Epstein signed a contract to manage The Beatles.
