Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week are Ember Days, one of the four seasonal groupings of such days, reminders of our need for penitence and a dying to self and of our reliance on God who orders our seasons. The tradition of marking these days was already ancient when the times of the year for their observance were fixed almost a thousand years ago by Pope Gregory VII, the great and saintly Hildebrand of Tuscany.

Karen Marie Knapp has posted well on our continued need for the message and witness conveyed by these days.
