There's a reference two posts down to the anniversary this week of the assassination of the Filipino reforming leader Benigno Aquino in 1983. The anniversary of another political assassination came yesterday.



The Irish patriot Michael Collins was ambushed and killed on 22 August 1922 as part of the long battle between supporters and opponents of the 1921 treaty with Britain. He had said after putting his signature to the treaty that "...I tell you, I have signed my death warrant."



A bronze statue of the maligned and underrated Collins was unveiled yesterday in Clonakilty, his home village in West Cork.
